Writers’ birthdays: May

Remembering novelist, poet and essay writer André Brink, who was born on 29 May 1935.

Brink was the first Afrikaans writer to have a book banned by the National Party government – the 1973 novel Kennis van die Aand.

The writer was a key figure in Die Sestigers, a South African literary movement that challenged the politics and social mores of apartheid. Much of his work challenged the orthodox ideas of the society he was born into, challenging the core of the establishment.

Brink died on 6 February 2015.
